October 7, 2016 is the date Shelly Selland will forever recall as the day she decided she had had enough. “I distinctly remember thinking, as a medical professional, how could I direct my patients to live healthier and make better life choices when I had let my own health deteriorate,” confessed Ms. Selland.  As the saying goes, Shelly felt she was ‘calling the kettle black’ and it was time to do something about it.

From that day forward, Shelly made a commitment to utilizing the education and experience she had gained as a Nurse Practitioner to formulate a smarter way to manage weight, to make better eating choices, to maximize nutrition and in general, live life healthier. To some, this would entail defining a “diet” or making an investment in buying and selling a nutritional product to put her plan into motion, but this was not the case for Shelly. She was intent on using her 35 years of medical experience and base her plan on a more clinical approach.

One year later, the results spoke for themselves. “I felt amazing! My energy levels had returned and I physically looked different,” stated Selland. Shelly used her own health and weight challenges to decipher what did and didn’t work. At the end of her trial, she had lost her excess weight and gained strength and flexibility. She attributed her success to the fact that she placed her focus on what her body needed from a laboratory perspective and not numbers on a scale. “I don’t necessarily believe in the word ‘diet’ and I think scales are for fish,” declared Ms. Selland.

With her newfound success, Shelly was anxious to share what she had learned. Her passion to give others the encouragement and the tools they need

to make lifestyle changes was where she felt her path was destined to travel. It included being the only individual in the area with a designed Certification of Education from the Obesity Management Association.

On the eve of 2018, Selland’s life changing experience had blossomed into a business plan and her vision of a Medical Spa was about to take wings. Shelly and her husband, Barry, had always done business with Dakotaland and utilized their local branch in Woonsocket for their mortgage. Shelly also recalls utilizing the Brooking and Volga branch locations while she was earning her Nurse Practitioner Degree from

South Dakota State University. “It seems Dakotaland has always been there throughout the different seasons of my life, so when we decided to take on a business venture, the Credit Union felt like the right choice,” shared Selland.

In March of 2018, Tailored to You Medical Spa and Weight Loss Clinic opened its doors in the Country Fair Plaza located at 1317 West Havens in Mitchell.

In a clinical spa atmosphere, Shelly and her staff specialize in uniquely tailoring a lifestyle plan to meet each person’s health care needs. Every client is given body composition testing and undergoes lab work to ensure each plan is individually designed and medically based. “We find our clients have the desire to make life changes and are seeking the ‘how’ to a healthier life and I am excited to provide that service,” explained Selland.

In addition to Ms. Selland, the Tailored To You staff is made up of a Registered Nurse, Cosmetologists/Aesthetician and Massage Therapists, who offer an array of medical and spa services such as hair removal, Botox, dermal fillers, facial peels, waxing, body massage, hair and makeup. Mitchell has been a good starting point for the Medical Spa, but Shelly believes this is just the beginning. She has sampled her services in the Huron area and has had other communities show interest in what Tailored To You has to offer.
