PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY

Make sure no additional damage can take place after the initial occurrence: throw a tarp over
a roof, board up a window, tear up wet carpet, etc. Take pictures along the way so the
adjuster can see exactly what you did.

CONTACT THE COMPANY OR YOUR LOCAL AGENT

Claims can be submitted a couple different ways: You may call your local agent or contact
the company directly by phone. Some companies allow you to submit claims online or thru
their app on your phone.

WAIT PATIENTLY

Give the insurance adjuster a day or two to contact you. If it is weather related, companies could
be inundated with several claims at once. Often times, they may be collecting additional
information prior to reaching out to make the claims process as smooth as possible. This is
a great time to jot down any questions you have about coverage or how the claims process
works. The adjuster will reach out to you for an explanation of what happened and arrange a
way to view the damage.

ASK QUESTIONS

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You won’t know unless you ask! Make sure you understand
why or why not a claim was covered. Understand how your deductibles and coverage amounts
play a part in determining what amount you may receive for a covered claim.

KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS

Keep any paid invoices or receipts related to the repairs of a covered claim. Often times there
may be additional monies held back which may be owed to an insured, but the insurance company may need proof of the amount of the repair work completed. The invoices may also act as proof for your local agent as to when updates were completed on your home.
